The short lyric was written in 1786. Freneau was inspired by the beauty of the wild honey suckle when he was walking at Chaeleston, South Carolina. It was virtually unread in the poet’s lifetime, yet it deserves a place among major English and Ame......

1、英语要学好,才能体会英语诗歌的语言魅力,才能感受英语的写作手法和感情渲染;

On Being Asked, Whence Is The Flower?

In May, when sea-winds pierced our solitudes,

I found the fresh Rhodora in the woods,

Spreading its leafless blooms in a damp nook,

To please the desert and the sluggish brook.

The purple petals, fallen in the pool,

Made the black water with their beauty gay;

Here might the red-bird come his plumes to cool,

And court the flower that cheapens his array.

Rhodora! if the sages ask thee why

This charm is wasted on the earth and sky,

Tell them, dear, that if eyes were made for seeing,

Then Beauty is its own excuse for being:

Why thou wert there, O rival of the rose!

I never thought to ask, I never knew:

But, in my simple ignorance, suppose

The self-same Power that brought me there brought you.

A Nation's Strength

Ralph Wall Emerson

Not gold,but only man can make

A people great and strong;

Men who for truth and honor's sake

Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,

Who dare while others fly;

They build a nation's pillar deep

And lift them to the sky.

不是黄金,只有人才能使民族伟大而强盛;

别人逃遁他们大显神勇;

A Review of the Poem A Nation's Strength

The poem entitled A Nation's Strength was written by an American poet named Ralph waldo Emerson,who was a representative of apriorist writers as well as a poet.In this poem he warmly sang high praises of the backboues of a great nation,who,for the sake of the truth and honor,fight and work selflessly and fearlessly.

This poem clearly shows the great image of the nation's backbone:who stand fast and suffer long for truth and honor's sake,and who work while others sleep.There fore,they build a nation's pillar deep,and make a people great strong.After reading this poem,I am determined to become a member of the nation's backbone when I grow up.

Though the poem is short,the ideas it expresses are deep.The language in the poem is simple,but the rhythm and the rhyme are not only beautiful but easy to read aloud and learn by heart.

Although Ralph Waldo Emerson served as a revolutionary thinker, writer, and poet of his time, his works cannot be defined without the proper analysis of the role that these pieces served in his attempts to reform American culture. Emerson's major purpose in writing was to portray and explore his views of Transcendentalism. These views composed Emerson's way of living, thinking, and specifically, writing. He embraced a perspective that valued a less rational and more intuitive manner of thinking that left him more in touch with his senses than with cultural conformities. The core values of Emerson's Transcendentalist beliefs are summed up by his poem Intellect. Throughout this short piece, he explores the concept that learning rationality is somehow outside of human nature, explaining it as, "Makes him to his own blood strange/" (Line 6). He also criticizes the

"Knowledge not its fountain knows/" (Line 2). typical teachings of his time in this poem, saying that there is no solid knowledge in their lessons because rationality is not knowledge, but knowledge is something that we are born containing. Emerson is often described as an American Romantic poet, mostly due to his subject matter, beliefs, and want for change from the conformity of the heavily European poetry of his time. Along with a variety of rhyme schemes, Emerson also had many styles of meter portrayed in his poetry. Brahma, Fate, and Concord Hymn all seem to have a scheme in which every other line rhymes, while Intellect was written in rhyming couplets. On the other hand, some of Emerson's other works have various patterns of rhyme. As a poet his style is ever changing, just as the world around him and his emotions; he truly used poetry as an outlet for his beliefs and for what he thought was the betterment of society. In his poem Ode, Emerson expresses his distaste for society's treatment of African-Americans and women. For example, The Snow Storm, Ode, and The Rhodora have no particular pattern of rhyme throughout them. In contrast, Emerson's Ode has no clear pattern of meter or even verse length and appears to be more comparable to the works of Walt Whitman than of his influences. Agreeing with the intuitive thinking and lack of rationality embraced in Transcendentalism is the unspecified rhyme schemes within some of Emerson's works. The Rhodora and The Snow-Storm are both written in meter close to iambic pentameter and show an outline similar to the more structured poets, like William Blake or William Wordsworth, who served as one of Emerson's influences, along with Coleridge and Carlyle. The variety within Emerson's rhyme patterns is indicative of his views that intuition is the greatest knowledge; he wrote in the scheme that was best suited to how he was feeling at the time rather than being bond to a specific pattern, like some of the neoclassical poets. Because of Emerson's Transcendentalist belief that all people, at the level of their souls, had equal access to divine inspiration, knowledge, and truth, much of his poetry and essays are related to anti-slavery and women's rights topics.
